Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about baking pies at home with our recipes

General

What is Andy's Pie: Pantry Tips?
Andy's Pie: Pantry Tips is Singapore's premier recipe collection and baking guide. We provide tested pie recipes with detailed ingredient costs and shopping guides to help you bake delicious pies at home. We're an educational resource - we don't sell products or offer catering services.
Are the recipes really free?
Yes! All our recipes are completely free to access. We provide full ingredient lists, detailed instructions, estimated costs, and shopping recommendations at no charge. Our mission is to help Singaporeans enjoy home-baked pies.
Do you sell pies or ingredients?
No. We're an educational website providing recipes and ingredient shopping information. We don't sell products, fulfill orders, or offer catering services. You'll bake the pies yourself using ingredients from supermarkets.
Is Andy's Pie: Pantry Tips halal certified?
We're not a food business, so certification doesn't apply. However, our recipes can be adapted for halal requirements - simply purchase halal-certified ingredients from supermarkets and follow the recipes. Many FairPrice and Cold Storage locations carry halal options.
Can I submit my own recipes?
We love hearing from home bakers! Contact us through our form with your tested recipe, and we'll consider featuring it on our site (with proper attribution, of course!).

Recipes

How accurate are the ingredient costs?
Our costs are based on 2026 prices from FairPrice and Cold Storage, Singapore's major supermarkets. Prices may vary by location and promotions. We update costs quarterly to keep them current. Actual costs may be slightly higher or lower depending on brands chosen.
Where do you source ingredient prices?
We regularly check prices at FairPrice, Cold Storage, and Sheng Siong. Our Shopping Malls guide shows you where to find these supermarkets near you.
Can I substitute ingredients?
Absolutely! Our recipes include notes about common substitutions. For example, you can use margarine instead of butter, or swap apple varieties. Check the Tips & Tricks section in each recipe for substitution guidance.
I'm a beginner. Which recipes should I start with?
Look for recipes tagged 'easy' difficulty. We recommend starting with Flaky Pie Crust Tutorial and Classic Apple Pie. These foundational recipes teach essential techniques that apply to all pies.
Do the recipes work in Singapore's humid climate?
Yes! All recipes are tested in Singapore kitchens. We've adjusted techniques for our tropical climate (like chilling dough longer due to humidity). Follow our temperature guidelines carefully.
Can I freeze pies made from your recipes?
Most pies freeze beautifully for up to 3 months. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap and foil. Bake from frozen, adding 15-20 minutes to baking time. Some cream-based pies don't freeze as well - check individual recipes.
Why do some recipes cost more than others?
Cost varies based on ingredients. Beef Wellington Pie ($48.75) uses premium beef tenderloin and mushrooms, while Classic Apple Pie ($14.20) uses simpler ingredients. We show costs upfront so you can choose recipes that fit your budget.
Are recipes tested?
Every recipe is tested multiple times in home kitchens before publishing. We document what works and what doesn't, so you get reliable results.

Shopping

Where can I buy ingredients in Singapore?
Our Shopping Malls guide lists 50+ major malls with supermarkets (FairPrice, Cold Storage, Giant, Sheng Siong). Each listing shows which supermarkets are at each mall, floor levels, and nearest MRT station.
Do you recommend specific brands?
We test with common brands available at FairPrice and Cold Storage. Recipe notes mention specific brands when it matters (e.g., 'FairPrice house brand works great'). But generally, any reputable brand works.
Can I buy ingredients online?
Yes! FairPrice Online, RedMart, and Cold Storage Online all deliver. However, for fresh ingredients like butter and fruits, we recommend shopping in-person to check quality.
What if an ingredient isn't available?
Check the substitution notes in each recipe. Most ingredients have alternatives. If you're stuck, use our Contact form to ask for substitute recommendations.

Baking Tips

I don't have a stand mixer. Can I still make these?
Absolutely! All our recipes can be made by hand or with a basic hand mixer. We include hand-method instructions where relevant. Pie-making is very forgiving.
My crust turned out tough. What went wrong?
Common causes: overworking the dough, using warm butter, or adding too much water. Check our Flaky Pie Crust Tutorial and Five Tips for Perfect Pie Crust blog post for troubleshooting.
Can I make pies ahead for a party?
Yes! Check our DIY Party Tips page for complete guidance on batch baking, timeline planning, and make-ahead strategies for parties of any size.
My pie filling is too watery. Help!
Add more thickener (cornstarch or flour) or cook the filling longer to reduce excess liquid. For fruit pies, macerating fruit with sugar beforehand helps identify how much liquid will be released.
