Reader Spotlight: Your Home Baking Stories

At Andy’s Pie: Pantry Tips, we don’t just share recipes - we get to be part of your lives, your celebrations, and your baking journeys. Over the past year, you’ve shared incredible stories with us, and today I want to share some of them with you.

These stories remind us why we do what we do, and they inspire us every single day.

The Proposal Pie

Sarah’s Story

“My boyfriend (now fiancé!) knows that I’ve been obsessed with perfecting my apple pie skills ever since I found your Classic Apple Pie recipe. For our three-year anniversary, he secretly contacted you guys asking which recipe would be best for a surprise.

You suggested the Classic Apple Pie, and he spent an entire Saturday in his tiny HDB kitchen baking his very first pie from scratch using your recipe. He told me he read the instructions at least five times and watched three YouTube videos about blind-baking!

When he picked me up saying we were going to dinner, he first wanted to ‘show me something.’ We went to his place, and there on the dining table was this gorgeous homemade apple pie with ‘Will you marry me?’ spelled out in pie dough letters on top.

I burst into tears before I could even read the letters properly. He got down on one knee right there, and of course I said yes! The pie was absolutely delicious - perfectly crisp bottom crust (he was so proud of mastering blind-baking), and the filling was just sweet enough.

We’re getting married next month, and yes, we’re serving mini pies from the recipes on your site at our wedding! I’m going to teach him how to make the Chicken Pot Pie next - a man who can bake is a keeper!”

Andy’s note: Sarah, your story made us tear up! Your fiancé emailed us three times asking about blind-baking techniques to get it perfect. So glad it worked out!

The Comfort Food Connection

Michael’s Story

“I moved to Singapore from the UK five years ago for work. The transition was harder than I expected - new job, new country, no family nearby. I was homesick and struggling.

One lonely Saturday, I was scrolling online looking for recipes that reminded me of home. I found your Chicken Pot Pie recipe and decided to give it a shot. The ingredient list looked doable, and I appreciated that you listed the costs - I was on a tight budget.

Making that pie was therapeutic. Following each step carefully, focusing on getting the pastry just right, filling the house with those familiar savory aromas - for those few hours, I wasn’t alone. When I took my first bite, I actually got emotional. It tasted just like the pies Gran used to make back in Yorkshire.

That weekend baking session became my ritual. Every Saturday morning, I’d choose a recipe from your site and spend the morning baking. The process became meditative, and sharing pies with neighbors helped me make friends in my building.

Five years later, I’m still here, and I’ve mastered 12 of your recipes! I’ve got a Singaporean girlfriend now, and I’m teaching her how to make proper British-style pies using your recipes. She’s hooked. Thank you for helping me feel at home halfway around the world - one pie at a time.”

Andy’s note: Michael, your story is why we do this. We’re so glad our recipes helped you build community and find home. Keep baking!

The Birthday Tradition

The Wong Family

“Our daughter Emma turns 10 this year, and we’ve made a homemade pie for her birthday every single year since she was three. It started because she was allergic to eggs and dairy as a toddler, and store-bought cakes were out of the question.

We found your Vegan Apple Pie recipe online and adapted it for her third birthday. She loved it! As she grew up and outgrew most of her allergies, we stuck with the tradition. We have photos of Emma with a pie at every age - you can literally watch her grow up through these birthday photos.

Now she’s adamant that birthdays aren’t birthdays without her homemade pie. This year she requested your Chocolate Silk Pie, which is very different from her usual apple, but hey - ten is a big deal! She wants to learn how to make it herself this year so she can ‘pass it on’ when she has kids someday.

We’ve moved houses, changed schools, and life has evolved, but the homemade birthday pie tradition remains constant. Thank you for providing tested recipes that work consistently year after year. You’re part of our family story now.”

Andy’s note: The Wongs email us photos every year! Emma, if you’re reading this - happy 10th birthday, and yes, we’ll help you learn to bake!

The Long-Distance Love

James’s Story

“I’m Singaporean, but I moved to Melbourne for university and stayed for work. My girlfriend Rachel is still in Singapore, and long-distance is tough.

One thing I really miss about home (besides Rachel!) is good savory pies. Australian meat pies are great, but they’re different from the style I grew up with. I found your Beef Mushroom Pie recipe and decided to give it a try.

Making that pie connected me to home in a way I didn’t expect. Sourcing ingredients that reminded me of Singapore, following your precise instructions, smelling those familiar flavors - it was like a hug from across the ocean.

Now I have a ritual: every Sunday morning, I bake something from your site while video-calling Rachel. She makes the same recipe in Singapore. We ‘eat together’ over video call, comparing notes on how ours turned out. It’s become our special thing.

Last month, Rachel made one of your pies and took it to the airport when she picked me up for my visit home. Best welcome-home gift ever! I’m moving back to Singapore next year, and one of the first things I’m doing is baking through your entire recipe collection in person with Rachel.”

Andy’s note: James, this is so sweet! Long-distance is hard, but baking ‘together’ is such a creative solution. Can’t wait for you to be back home!

The Study Group Ritual

University Students (Group Submission)

“We’re a group of six NUS students who formed a study group in our first year. One Sunday, someone suggested we make food together before studying, and we randomly picked your Classic Apple Pie recipe.

That first attempt was chaotic - six people in a tiny kitchen, arguing about what ‘fork-tender apples’ meant, making a huge mess. But the pie turned out amazing, and we were hooked.

For two years now, Sunday study sessions start with baking one of your recipes. We’ve worked through apple pie, chicken pot pie, lemon meringue, shepherd’s pie, and more. We take turns being ‘head baker’ each week. There’s something about baking together that bonds people - and we’ve eaten your pies through midterms, finals, project deadlines, and emotional breakdowns.

This is our final year, and while we’re excited to graduate, we’re sad that our Sunday baking tradition might end. We’ve decided that no matter where life takes us, we’ll meet up once a year to bake one of your recipes together and remember these years.

To future students reading this: start a cooking tradition with your study group. It makes the stress bearable and creates memories that outlast any exam.”

Andy’s note: This group emails us photos of their weekly bakes! You’ve inspired us. Students, your annual reunion baking sessions will mean even more as the years go by.

The Anniversary Recreation

Linda’s Story

“My husband and I are celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary this year. Twenty-five years ago, we had our wedding reception at a small restaurant that’s now closed. The one thing I remember most clearly from that day (besides marrying my best friend) was the apple pie they served for dessert. It was perfect - flaky, sweet, simple.

I’ve tried to recreate that taste for years with no success. Last month, I stumbled upon your Classic Apple Pie recipe. Something about the simplicity of the ingredient list felt right. I made it on a Saturday afternoon, and when I tasted it, I almost cried.

It was that taste. After 25 years of searching, I’d found it - or something so close it didn’t matter. The flaky crust, the cinnamon-spiced apples, that perfect balance of sweet and tart.

For our anniversary dinner at home next week, I’m making your Classic Apple Pie for dessert. A full-circle moment connecting our 25th anniversary back to our wedding day. Sometimes the simplest things carry the most meaning, and your recipe gave me back a piece of my wedding day I thought I’d lost forever.”

Andy’s note: Linda, we’re honored to be part of your anniversary. The best recipes are often the simplest ones - just like the best marriages. Happy 25th!

The First-Time Baker

Priya’s Story

“I’m 28 years old and had never baked anything from scratch before finding your site. My mom was an amazing cook but never taught me - I was always ‘too busy’ with school and work. When she passed away last year, I realized I didn’t know how to make any of her recipes.

I wanted to learn to bake as a way to heal and honor her memory. I started with your Flaky Pie Crust recipe because you had step-by-step photos and very detailed instructions. I was terrified I’d mess it up, but your notes about what ‘good’ dough should look like helped me so much.

My first crust was… okay. Not great, but edible! I’ve now made it twelve times, and my twelfth crust looked like something from a bakery. The progress felt symbolic - learning new skills, building confidence, creating something with my own hands.

I’ve moved on to full pies now. Every time I bake, I think of my mom and feel connected to her. She would be proud that I finally learned to bake. Thank you for writing recipes that work for complete beginners like me. You gave me more than recipes - you gave me a way to grieve and grow.”

Andy’s note: Priya, we’re so sorry for your loss. Your journey from first-timer to confident baker is inspiring. Your mom would absolutely be proud.
